As part of the Siemens Healthineers Shape 21 RSNA Experience, Siemens Healthineers organized four days of innovation talks and panel discussions on various topics during November and December 2020. One of the main topics was artificial intelligence in healthcare. Jörg Aumüller (Siemens Healthineers) discussed together with Anthony Chang (CHOC Children’s Hospital, Orange County, USA), David Winkel (University Hospital Basel, Switzerland), Andreas Büttner (Siemens Healthineers) and Richard Frank (Siemens Healthineers) the topic “Intelligence-based decision support”. The four participants represented different perspectives on AI in terms of ethics, clinical practice, human cognition in clinical medicine and reimbursement of AI applications.
The experts provide insights into the questions:
- The value of artificial intelligence is to automate things. What are the reasons for the necessity of automation?
- Artificial intelligence can also be seen as a digital companion in clinical routine. How does it pay off for an early adopter to use AI and what is the role of operational efficiency and clinical accuracy?
- It’s a long way from obtaining the data, training the data, validating, implementing and releasing these medical devices. How can we ethically ensure that this is some kind of right process we are talking about? Where should we use AI and where do we find ethical limitations?
- What are the expectations of young doctors entering this era of artificial intelligence?
- What are the biggest obstacles when it comes to introducing a technology like artificial intelligence into clinical routine? How can implementation and cultural change take place successfully?
