In a special interview for the ESR’s premium event on ‘Artificial Intelligence in Oncologic Imaging’, the European School of Radiology (ESOR) spoke to Peter Schardt, Chief Technology Officer at Siemens Healthineers. Schardt provided insight into several topics, such as the impact of technology in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept and progress of digital twin technology, and the key challenges for innovation in radiology.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge. What impact does technology have in supporting healthcare professionals and patients?
Thank you for addressing that question to the CTO, because I think technology is a very critical element to getting relief during this pandemic. And I believe there are three major areas which are really progressing now. The first is establishing a physical distance between the physicians, the healthcare providers and the patients. So, remote operation of equipment is definitely, I think, straight forward technology to reduce the risk of infections. Second, technology helps us to establish solutions much faster and so, for example, developing new tests for detecting the COVID-19 disease, but also for the antibodies in the serum. Through the use of technology, we have significantly accelerated the development of such tests. But, most excitedly, I also believe the new role of artificial intelligence helps us to actually build new tools to detect and also quantify the progression of the disease with radiological images even faster.
